Demma
Fruit Company bases its origin back to 1937.
It was at this time Anthony Demma started the
company as nothing more then a street vendor.
He would run a small truck into Chicago, pick
his produce then sell it out of the truck on
the streets of Lincoln. His market included
house wife's and the restaurants in the city.
As
the company grew, he started buying direct
from the growers, and opened a small facility
in Lincoln. He added delivery trucks and the
company grew from there. He supplied the many
independent grocers as well as the schools and
other institutions such as the military base
and universities in the city.
In
1979 he and his partner Mickey Messineo, sold
the company to two brothers John and Dennis
Jacobson. They were new to the industry, but
learned from these original owners that stayed
on part time. They saw that the industry was
changing and to keep up with these changes,
they built a new facility. They added a
processing operation as well as they started
ripening and repacking of tomatoes. They
hired Bob Cane to handle sales and with the
efforts of the three the company grew and
prospered.
In 1989, the
company was sold to an investor group. That
group had plans to use the good name and
grow the company on a regional distributor.
In ten years it had facilities in Lincoln,
Omaha, Sioux Falls, SD., Des Moines, IA. ,
Kansas City, MO. Tulsa, and Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma. Because of some unforeseen
circumstances the company shut its doors in
September of 2000.
The company was
not in existence till November of 2004. It was
at that time through the encouragement of the
food service industry in the Lincoln market it
reopened its doors. The new owners are John
and Dennis Jacobson and Bob Cane. The three
original members of the team that purchased
the company back in 1979.
Their plans are
to maintain a strong local produce company.
They wish to recreate the original Demma's, as
this is what the market wants. |
